Room 323 [Thursday, Afternoon]

Her room felt bizarrely empty without Edward around, not that Effy would admit that out loud. Still, a week down the line with his stuff gone and the dorm lists changed, she was getting the feeling now, that he probably wasn't coming back.

So today, since she didn't really have anywhere else to be, was the day for rearranging and spreading herself out a little, and making the most of this having her own room.

Made it feel less empty, somehow, and gave her something to think about that wasn't what was going on at home, or certain other confusing moments of this week. Perfect, as far as she was concerned.

"Better ideas," Effy agreed, checking where his legs were and finding a little more space to stretch into. "At lest no going to make me feel like a six year old."

"Well, you are pretty small," he said, unable to resist that opening. "I'm sure you can throw a tantrum like a six year old too."

"Think you're confused about relative size of things," Effy informed him. She was far bigger than a little kid, thanks.

"I think I'm perfectly right," he answered with a shrug of his shoulder. "You're small. I'm not confused, you're in denial."

"I am always right," he corrected. "S'okay, I'm patient with those that don't know any better. Someday, you'll learn. It's part of your growing process."

"Never going to be that brainwashed," she assured him. "Bad luck."

"Then you're always going to be wrong," he said nonchalantly, one shoulder raising in a shrug. "Definite bad luck for you. I'm sure you'll get used to the idea."

"I don't think so." Because that would make it so, Effy, yes.

"Don't make me kick you out my bed." If he could threaten that one, so could she.

"I don't think you want me to leave," he decided, sounding confident. "And I'm used to those that don't want to hear the truth right off. They just have to get used to the idea that I'm always right. Hard truth but I find that most people adapt."

"You actually have examples?" Effy doubted it, somehow. He couldn't have that many people who automatically agreed with the fact he was just always right.

"Sure do," he said because he couldn't just say no to that. He probably couldn't say anyone from the island but she knew next to nothing about his home life. He could get away with friends from home, he was sure. "Why, you want names and numbers or something? They might wonder why you're so obsessed with checking up on me."

"It's weird that you think I care that much about checking up on you." It seemed to be coming up a lot with them lately.

"I don't think I said or even really implied the word care in there at all," he pointed out, shaking his head. "You're the one that's gone automatically to the whole caring each time. First with my bed, now with this. I offer up proof, you take it as me wanting you to care. Where's that leap coming from?"

"I'd have to give a shit to go calling your friends." Sounded like implication to her.

"You're the one that asked," he reminded her, shaking his head. "You wanted to know if I had names, I gave you the option to prove that I'm right. Not that you care."

"I know," he retorted immediately, rolling his eyes. "Don't fucking worry, I don't care about you either. Congratulations, you're one of many."

Effy rolled her eyes, covering any twinge that might've come with that. Apparently, saying it was one thing, and hearing it back was another. Who knew?

"You're not being very persuasive," she told him.

"Persuasive about what? About talking to Griff? Talk to him, don't talk to him, I don't care," he said, trying to cover any pissiness her words might have riled up in him. Bury it down, lock it away.

A lot of not caring going around today. Lot of covering of various things, too.

"It was," he confirmed sharply. "And I asked. I did what I said I was going to do. I don't give two shits if you talk to him or sit in your room and sulk."

"... Why would I sulk about it?" Effy shrugged, shifting back a little more comfortably on the bed. "I'll do it."

"I meant in general sulking," he said, shaking his head. "I don't expect you to sulk about this. It's really not brooding material. I'm sure you have plenty of other things to sit and brood about."

"I'd rather not." She did. But that really wasn't the point. "Better ways of spending time."
