Room 323 [Sunday, Afternoon]

With Christmas done and past, there didn't seem to be a hell of a lot going on around here, as far as she could tell. Few days until New Year's, and that trip, and a shitload of empty space to fill until then. Going out was her typical fallback at times like this, but you couldn't do that sort of thing all the time. Unfortunately. It would've been nice, having just one simple thing to think about. Never seemed to be the way things worked out, did it?

Spending her afternoon reading and idly blowing smoke rings out her window was a secondary option. She'd decided a long time ago that classic literature was more fun when there was alcohol or drugs involved. Pity that philosophy never got her by in classes.

"It was implied," she clarified, with a little bit of a smile. "But you've got me, so I don't think you'll go anywhere."

"Maybe I've had my allotment of British girls," he joked, reaching up to flick the edges of her hair. "The accent doesn't do it for me anymore."

"Liar," she said again, shaking her head with a bit of a smile. It was the 'maybe' that did it. They always put it there, but it didn't mean much. "Still fucking love it."

"Getting a little accusatory today, aren't you?" he asked, snickering. "Besides, I'd love it more if you used it for a few different things. It'd make them better."

"There are things I can use it for other than talking to you?"

Pretty sure his mind was going somewhere dirty (it usually was), but she didn't have to let hers follow. Not just yet.

"Not what I meant," he said, inviting himself to try and take her cigarette again. He was being selfish today. And it wasn't like she was putting up a lot of fight. "I meant you could use it to talk to me about more interesting things. You think I like your accent, prove it."

"Mm, what would hold your attention," she mused aloud, cocking her head as she looked up at him. "I just can't think."

"You proclaim that you're a smart girl," he said, puffing away on her cigarette since she hadn't objected, "so I'm sure you'll figure something out. I can wait."

He'd probably start taking up space on her bed if she took too long because he was damn lazy.

Effy hummed thoughtfully. "Stamps?" she asked, smirking a little and going to steal her cigarette back. "Remember how much you love that topic."

"Oh yeah. Stamps," he said and rolled his eyes. "I think I exhausted my love of that hobby when I gave you your collection. Just didn't hold the same sway anymore."

"Aww, shame." Yeah. Really. "Here I thought I had you all figured out."

Oh, she'd seen how he'd reacted to certain things she said, but teasing him was such fun. Couldn't help herself.

"Cigarettes?" He did seem to be enjoying stealing hers, after all.

"You're gonna talk to me about cigarettes?" he asked, sounding dubious. "You know, most of the time, you smoke them and be done with it. I think I'd get bored if you used your accent to talk about cigarettes."

Besides, stealing and smoking hers was much more fun. Which is exactly why he was trying to do that again.

Fortunately, Effy wasn't all that fussed. Her own fault for offering in the first place.

"Maybe," she allowed. Fortunately, she wasn't actually about to start lecturing him on that particular topic. "Very few things that actually hold your attention," she noted.

"Because you're somehow different in that respect?" he questioned, snickering. "You thought you had me all figured out, you should know better than anyone what all can hold my attention."

Effy's lips twisted into a smirk, and she nodded.

"I do." There were a couple of things she'd witnessed first hand. "I've done it. A few times." Seen his reaction when she'd told him she cared, seen it sharing little fantasies, and when she'd breathed his name into his ear. She'd definitely done it.

"So, don't make it sound like it's such a hard thing to do," he told her, grinning lopsidedly. "It's not that hard to hold my attention if you know what you're doing. You know what you're doing, Effy? Or do you want an instruction manual on me?"

"Wouldn't mind. Might be a good read." Less confusing than Anna Karenina and remembering all those Russian names.

Plus, never could know too much, she didn't think.

"Too bad, it's still in progress because things change so frequently," Alex said, shrugging. "You'll have to make due with what you know. If you wanna know more, you'll have to ask or figure it out your own damn self."

"Last time I asked, you told me to figure it out for myself," she noted, reaching up to trace a line up his neck with her forefinger. "Guess that leaves option two."

"Guess it does," he said, tilting his head up a little at that little movement. "Think you're up to that sort of task?"

"Told you," she said, shaking her head. "Already done it." Repeating that couldn't be that hard, and she leaned up a little closer. "I know what you like to hear."

"Want to hear just how much you're wanted," she said, Little stroke to his ego. She smiled. "And maybe a little detail on how, and why."

"Am I getting closer?"

"Maybe." Yes. He wasn't that hard a guy to figure out in some ways and she'd sort of nailed what he liked to hear. Today though, it had the added bonus of keeping him away from the things he'd been brooding about for awhile. "I suppose you're not that far off, no."

"Well you are," she assured him. "Wanted." He had to know that already, somehow. "And I'd take you pretty much any way I could get you." Had him listening now, didn't she. Fairly fucking sure she did.

She could prove she had him down on this count, she thought.

Alex did know that but hearing it, even if he knew it, was still a little heady especially from someone like her.

"You're attracted to me, I knew that," he said, putting up a little resistance to her words. It was something. "Thought that was just part of the whole thing."

Oh yeah, he was listening and trying to combat her and her accent but it'd probably prove futile.

Honestly, there was a little something felt good about saying it, and knowing that her words could, and did, affect him like they did.

"You knew that already too," Effy pointed out mildly. It was getting easier now to admit that. There was more to it all than that.
