Room 323 [Thursday, Early Evening]

Relaxing as days without classes could be, they did have a tendency to give far too much time to think, and over-think about just about everything that had gone on in the last week or so. There was a good lot of stuff that fell into that frustratingly complex category, and Effy had spent her day avoiding that, by being out and about and doing things, cold as it was.

It was only on the way back she'd noticed the overabundance of candy canes, grabbed a couple from the cafeteria and was sucking on one as she pottered around her room and returned a couple of calls from Panda and Tony.

It kept her oral fixation satisfied and was probably better for her lungs. Win win.

And he didn't know if that was helpful or not in regards to all this crap between them. Probably a combination.

"I did that last night," he said, shrugging and taking up a spot on her bed since it was there and he'd made himself at home before. It wasn't that different to do it now. Well, not really. "Have a good time being all healthy and shit? You look positively bouncy."

Oh yeah, because Effy was just full of bouncy joy. She could barely contain it.

"I think it's this," she decided, gesturing with her candy cane. "Brings out my festive side." Although, for all her sarcasm, the fact it was getting said with a bit of a smile, did prove her mood wasn't half bad.

"It was nice out. Refreshing and all it was supposed to be."

"I decided to sleep." Felt like a good way to spend his time. "My classes are done for the week so it was smoke on the roof last night, sleep in this morning and then wing it from there. You happened to get included in my winging. Aren't you lucky?"

"Oh yeah, privileged to help you avoid boredom," she said, grinning a little.

Actually, there was something satisfying about the fact he chose to stop by as much as he did. Of course there was.

"Am actually taking it as a compliment."

"It wasn't meant to be anything bad so taking it as a compliment sounds like the logical thing to do," he replied, shrugging. "That mean you're gonna help me avoid boredom? You got something planned?"

Of course she didn't but hey, he could take semantics and twist them around too.

"Not much one for plans." His idea of winging it was one she followed often.

Which was 'no, I don't have anything planned' in Effy. He'd probably figured her backwards way of saying things by now.

"Well then, I'm gonna end up being bored and falling asleep on your bed."

Not an unusual occurrence as of late. Whatever. Shut up. He wasn't that tired.

"You never make plans?" he asked, curious.

"Not never." Rarely. "Made plans with you, remember?" She hoped he fucking remembered that. Hadn't successfully managed to get parts of it out of her mind for the last few days.

"Yeah, I remember," he said, rolling his eyes. "Amazingly, I don't do something with one girl and then immediately forget it the next day when something else comes along and catches my interest."

Especially that day. Wasn't like she was alone in all that overthinking. It'd been shaking his focus for a few days.

"Just checking." Well, he had apparently forgotten for a brief moment there.

"I like a little spontaneity." Knowing everything you were going to do down to the barest detail would get so damn dull, wouldn't it? "It's exciting."

"Have I ever seen you be spontaneous?" he wondered, tapping his chin. "Or just reactionary?"

"Must be losing my touch." Hadn't been kicked out of a school in a while, not that she particularly wanted to be, but... That one had been all her instigated spontaneity in action.

"You should do something about that," he said, leaning back on his hands. "Be spontaneous at me. Show me that you're not just talking to impress me."

"Feels like something wrong with planned spontaneity," she commented. How were you supposed to do that on command, anyway?

"There are ways to do planned spontaneity and make it good," Alex replied, shrugging one shoulder. "I've done it to you before."

"And it was very good." That she would never deny. Memorable, too, considering she was pretty sure she knew the instance he was talking about.

She nudged him with her foot, a teasing sort of reprimand. "Making me look bad."

"See, if I can do it, anyone can," he said, reaching for her foot in reaction since she was nudging. That's what she got. "Might be making you look bad but I bet I don't make you feel bad, do I?"

There was a shake of her head indicated her response to that. No, nothing about any of that was bad.

"Thought you'd be claiming only you could do that because you were more awesome than the rest."

"I am more awesome than the rest," he said, letting her foot go but not without flicking her ankle, "and you just don't wanna do it. That's all right. Probably couldn't surprise me anyway."

"Did I say I didn't want to do it?" No, she just talked around it, and talked around it until it seemed that way.

Not unusual.

It was a compulsion, she'd claim. Plus? Fun.

"No, you're just being your usual vague self and avoiding doing it which means I made an assumption that I think might be right," he said, shrugging and making no apologies for his assumption. "You really can't surprise me with your spontaneity."

Or, well, she probably could if she hit on the right things but he didn't think she would so his confidence felt firm.

"Never surprised you before?" she wondered. She thought she had, but maybe that was just her imagination.

"Have you?" he asked, throwing that question back at her. He could pick out a few times he knew he'd surprised her. And now he wondered if she could do the same. "Thought you knew me well enough to recognize surprise by now."

"I thought I had," she answered. Sure there were moment in there. There had to be. "You sounded less than sure."

"I thought I was the one that did most of the surprising," he answered, shrugging. "But, you know, if you think so, sure, we can go with that."

There was honesty mixed in with some challenging stirred with some teasing there. She liked to wind him up, he liked the same.
