Room 323 [Thursday, Afternoon]

Her room felt bizarrely empty without Edward around, not that Effy would admit that out loud. Still, a week down the line with his stuff gone and the dorm lists changed, she was getting the feeling now, that he probably wasn't coming back.

So today, since she didn't really have anywhere else to be, was the day for rearranging and spreading herself out a little, and making the most of this having her own room.

Made it feel less empty, somehow, and gave her something to think about that wasn't what was going on at home, or certain other confusing moments of this week. Perfect, as far as she was concerned.

"You're the one that asked," he reminded her, shaking his head. "You wanted to know if I had names, I gave you the option to prove that I'm right. Not that you care."

"I don't." Just so that was crystal.

"I know," he retorted immediately, rolling his eyes. "Don't fucking worry, I don't care about you either. Congratulations, you're one of many."

Effy rolled her eyes, covering any twinge that might've come with that. Apparently, saying it was one thing, and hearing it back was another. Who knew?

"You're not being very persuasive," she told him.

"Persuasive about what? About talking to Griff? Talk to him, don't talk to him, I don't care," he said, trying to cover any pissiness her words might have riled up in him. Bury it down, lock it away.

A lot of not caring going around today. Lot of covering of various things, too.

"Thought that was why you came by."

"It was," he confirmed sharply. "And I asked. I did what I said I was going to do. I don't give two shits if you talk to him or sit in your room and sulk."

"... Why would I sulk about it?" Effy shrugged, shifting back a little more comfortably on the bed. "I'll do it."

"I meant in general sulking," he said, shaking his head. "I don't expect you to sulk about this. It's really not brooding material. I'm sure you have plenty of other things to sit and brood about."

"I'd rather not." She did. But that really wasn't the point. "Better ways of spending time."

"What better ways do you have of spending your time?" he wondered curiously. "Enlighten me since you seem to think I have too much free time. I really don't think you're any better."

"I go out a lot," she answered simply. "Consider that a better use of time than just brooding."

"Well, look at that, a similarity," he said flippantly. "I go out a lot too. And sometimes I just don't bother with coming back to my room. Especially if I'm having fun elsewhere."

He was a bastard.

He was, and Effy, determined not to let anything show, looked away from him. Seemed like it was one of those days for driving each other crazy.

"Mark of a good night." Well, it was. That was the truth. "Shouldn't want to go home before morning."

"I don't tend to," he said, watching her carefully but pushing anything that wasn't sarcasm, flippancy and aloofness down and away. It proved difficult. "I'm glad you support my ways of having fun."

Or, you know, hated him for being such a jackass just because he was pissed off.

"I'd ask you to come along sometimes but you're too busy going out yourself and all."

"We've managed to combine our fun nights out before, somehow." On the days when they weren't poking at each other like this.

"I thought it did," he agreed with a slight shrug. "But you're the one who says she goes out a lot, maybe it didn't compare to your other excursions."

Effy lifted a shoulder herself. She wasn't looking at him still, but her lips twitched in a slight bit of a smile.

"Was pretty good," she allowed. For Effy, queen of the understatement, that was high praise. "Didn't get back before morning, did we?"

"No," he said and pushed himself into a sitting position. She wasn't looking at him, he still felt the edges of anger and he had no idea what was going on. He shook his head and scrubbed his fingers through his hair. "No, we didn't. It was fun. It was good. Everything looks better in the mornings anyway."

Catching that movement, Effy glanced across at him. "Something about seeing it from that side. Better than waking up early for it."

"Poetic," he said and rubbed his eyes wearily. "I think it's just because I'm either drunk or hysterically exhausted that I just don't give a fuck. Who knows. I hate mornings still. Just not as bad as I hate other things."

"Hope you didn't pick any early classes, then," she remarked casually, regaining a little more of her normal confidence now they'd gone a couple of minutes without snapping.

Something fucking wrong with her at the moment, letting dumb things like that get to her. Had to get over that.

"My classes are fine," he said, shrugging his shoulders and then rolling them to try and work some of the tension that had built up out of them. "They're in the beginning of the week, I get them over with, I have more time for the fun stuff."

"Went and spread mine all out," she said, pulling a face. "But, guess at least I've got space between." Sticking with the safe subjects, yeah.
