Room 323 [Thursday, Afternoon]

Her room felt bizarrely empty without Edward around, not that Effy would admit that out loud. Still, a week down the line with his stuff gone and the dorm lists changed, she was getting the feeling now, that he probably wasn't coming back.

So today, since she didn't really have anywhere else to be, was the day for rearranging and spreading herself out a little, and making the most of this having her own room.

Made it feel less empty, somehow, and gave her something to think about that wasn't what was going on at home, or certain other confusing moments of this week. Perfect, as far as she was concerned.

"Just being mine should give it bonus points," she decided, leaning against it as she looked down at him.

"I think of all beds equally until I actually get to see how they work up close and personal," he said, leaning back on his elbow now and sprawling a little more. "Can't just judge a book by its cover."

"You've been in my bed before," Effy reminded him. Just in case he'd forgotten that little detail.

"I know," he said and laughed briefly. He hadn't forgotten, no. "And that's why it qualifies for top marks. Because I've seen it up close and personal. It's not a bad bed at all."

"Got a criteria they've got to meet for that?" she asked, a little curious.

Bullshitting was a talent of his so he started listing things as soon as they came to mind.

"Cleanliness," he started, nodding. "Can't be having dirty fun on already dirty sheets. Ew. At least two pillows. In case there's a need for sleep."

He had three on his own bed.

"Unbroken headboard," he continued. "Good firm back support. That's good for a few things. Lack of cutesy, girly bedding. Good company."

"Put a lot of thought into this," she noted, smirking. "Bit too much free time?"

"You wish that was the case," he said and shook his head. She'd love the ammo for mocking. "No, my schedule's been nice and full. Get a day here and there but, you know. Most of the time, busy."

That was a lie but hey, she'd called him out on being bored enough to make a bed criteria list.

"Liar," Effy said mildly. "Told me you just spent a week doing fuck all," she reminded him.

"For the most part, I did do fuck all," he said, shrugging and just laying down on her bed now, one arm tucked behind his head. "But not all my time is free even when you're out of the fucking country. There are other things I can do."

"I'm sure." Well, of course there were other things to do. But he seemed to come find her a whole lot when she was in the country.

"You shooting for a detailed rundown of my week or something?" he asked, making a face. "Or do you just want reassurance that I didn't do anything without you?"

"Really don't need to know your entire schedule, thanks," she answered immediately, finding whatever space was left on her bed to sit in.

Considering he said he did fuck all for most of it, sounded downright boring. "Save it for someone else."

"Hey, you're the one that keeps trying to bring up that I didn't do shit and that I have all this free time," he pointed out. "Like you're fucking daring me to prove you wrong. And I can start rattling off things if you're really that curious about what I did and what I do."

"Not daring," she assured him. "Just... making conversation." She wasn't always very good at that. "Pick your own topic, or something."

Well, now he almost felt bad. Almost. It still felt a little like daring to him. The fact that she was trying to make conversation with him was a little surprising. Not bad, just surprising.

"You wanna talk?" he asked, nodding once before rolling onto his side, head propped up on his hand. "Got any plans for all the new room you have?"

It probably was a little bit like daring. Because Effy sometimes couldn't help herself.

She shrugged. "Dunno. Buy a couple posters, spread all my junk out a little more. Nothing drastic. Got some advice?"

"Never really had this much space of my own," he said, looking around the room. Without another person, it was pretty big. "I don't tend to spread out unless I'm sleeping. Fluffy stuffed animals for you to cuddle?"

Effy shot him an incredulous look.

"Think I'll save my money." So, no cuddly toys for her then. "That what you'd go for?" she assumed with a bit of a smile.

"Fuck no," he said and made a face. "I'd go for a television, probably. Maybe a hammock."

He'd always really wanted a hammock. Secret confession. Shhh.

"Bookshelf," he added after a moment. "Things like that."

"Better ideas," Effy agreed, checking where his legs were and finding a little more space to stretch into. "At lest no going to make me feel like a six year old."

"Well, you are pretty small," he said, unable to resist that opening. "I'm sure you can throw a tantrum like a six year old too."

"Think you're confused about relative size of things," Effy informed him. She was far bigger than a little kid, thanks.

And she did not tantrum, either.
